Welcome to the Post 259 Veteran Services Hub

POST SERVICE OFFICER  SERVICE OFFICER

At the Herbert D. Gibb American Legion Post 259 in DeBary, Florida, our commitment to our fellow service members doesn't end when the uniform comes off. We are dedicated to ensuring that veterans, active-duty personnel, and their families receive the advocacy, clarity, and benefits they have rightfully earned.

Whether you are navigating a new VA initiative, adjusting to civilian life, or dealing with an ongoing medical issue, our Service Officer network is here to point you in the right direction.

To best serve you, it helps to understand how the American Legion structure works. Our service delivery is a collaborative pipeline between our local Post volunteers and state-certified professionals:

Our Local Post Service Officer (PSO): Rob Wilkenson is your first line of local contact. Based right here in the DeBary/Orange City community, the PSO acts as an initial navigator, educator, and compassionate peer.

The Department Service Officer (DSO): is a fully accredited representatives of the American Legion and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). DSOs carry the formal legal authority (Power of Attorney) required to officially file, litigate, and track complex claims with the federal government.

What Our Local Post Service Officer Can Do for You

Think of our local Post Service Officer as your community resource compass. While local PSOs do not directly file or legally litigate your claims, they execute several vital veteran functions free of charge:

1. Initial Benefits Guidance & Inquiry Reviews

Our PSO helps break down complex VA terminology into plain language. If you have questions about what programs might apply to you, we can sit down and review your unique situation regarding:

*   VA Disability Compensation

* Veterans’ Pension Programs

*   VA Healthcare Enrollment

*   GI Bill and Educational Assistance

*   VA Home Loan Certificate of Eligibility

2. Information Gathering & Readiness Assistance

Filing a successful VA claim requires meticulous documentation. Our local officer can help you understand the types of evidence you will need to gather before submitting paperwork, such as medical records, service treatment histories, and your DD-214.

3. Direct Warm-Handoff Referrals

Once your preliminary inquiries are answered and your baseline records are clear, our local PSO will connect you directly with a state-accredited Department Service Officer (DSO). This ensures your official claim packages are prepared by certified legal experts.

4. Community Emergency Programs & Outreach

Beyond federal VA benefits, our Post works closely with specialized networks like PROJECT: VetRelief, local food pantries, housing programs, and homeless veteran outreach initiatives to provide rapid assistance during times of sudden financial hardship.
